Last week, a group of divers made a horrific discovery while exploring Indonesia's Kokoya Island: two dugongs were held captive in marine cages.
It would appear to be a mother and her baby. If the little one had no other obstacle than the cage, the mother was chained by the tail. These two dugongs had been captured by a local fisherman to show them to tourists in order to earn money.
Witnessing the suffering of the animals, the divers asked the fisherman to release them, explaining that it was an endangered species. Although the fisherman appeared to nod, the divers released images and a video on social media to involve authorities. The next day, the region's marine authorities went to the spot where the cages had been spotted to verify that the dugongs had indeed been released. As the fisherman had not yet done anything in this direction, the authorities themselves released the two dugongs.
