THE PROBLEM OF REFRACTION
As soon as the field angle exceeds 80 ° or 90 °, the difference in refractive indices between aquatic and aerial environments creates aberrations that are all the more important as the field angle is wide. The further you move away from the center of the window, the greater the deformation. Your GoPro®, in 1080p recording, gives you a spectacular 127 ° angle of view with Full HD quality. So that there is no distortion, all the light rays must arrive perpendicular to the window, so a spherical window must be used. But the spherical porthole in turn poses problems of focusing. In fact, behind a spherical diopter, a virtual image is formed, the position of which in front of the objective depends in particular on the radius of curvature of the window. If the minimum focus acceptable by the Gopro lens is beyond this virtual image, then focusing is impossible, the camera is farsighted. It is therefore necessary to have a window with the greatest possible radius of curvature to move the virtual image away and enter the focus adjustment range. This is why the original very small porthole does not provide a sharp image when shooting underwater. ”

SUBSPACE: AN INNOVATIVE SWISS SOCIETY
Founder of SUBSPACE PICTURES, Jean-Claude Protta, Engineer from Geneva born in 1942, has been practicing scuba diving since 1958. He became a FFESSM National Monitor in 1965 and received the title of National Instructor (M ****) from the Swiss Federation of Underwater Sports. - Sailors in 1966.
In 1958, he built his first waterproof case for a Kodak® 620 camera (6x9cm format). Since then, he has not stopped creating, building or modifying waterproof housings, flashes and lighting intended for photography, cinema and, more recently, video.
It was in 1990, after returning from a 10-year trip around the world that he decided to found his own company in order to share his experience and his passion for everything related to underwater images.
For more than 20 years, he participated in the most innovative projects, the development and manufacture of shooting equipment for the making of the Oceans Film is the culmination of years of manufacturing high quality equipment.
During the year 2011, thanks to wonderful friends, Pascal Courtin joined SUBSPACE PICTURES in order to take over from Jean-Claude Protta. He is a Franco-Swiss engineer, born in 1976, has been practicing scuba diving since 1999. In the 2000s he manufactures underwater lighting and studies the possibilities of developing diving equipment.
