A bluefin tuna has just been auctioned in Tokyo for 565 Euros: the protection of the species, in the face of such financial stakes, seems a very difficult challenge to meet. The 000-kilogram tuna was purchased by a Japanese restaurateur who owns a chain of sushi restaurants. At the start of the year, it was a restaurateur from Hong Kong who set the previous price record.
Sino-Japanese War
The craze for sushi and sashimi, which is currently gaining in China, is inexorably raising the stakes: "I wanted to land the best tuna, the buyer explained, so that Japanese customers, and not foreigners, can enjoy it." Japan currently consumes 80% of the bluefin tuna caught in the world, but the increased purchasing power of part of the Chinese population could be a game-changer. And under these conditions, the situation of the species may not improve.
