Public consultation in Réunion! Stop shark fishing

Currently and until December 20, 2021, the public consultation on shark management in Réunion is taking place. You have the power to weigh in the balance and rectify the disastrous trajectory so far adopted by the region.

Shark fishing in Réunion, particularly in a marine reserve (zpr), is an aberration. In a place which should nevertheless be a haven of preservation 15 years after its creation, this place is still in danger. Through this public consultation, the prefect hopes to legalize fishing practices even in the protected waters of the ZPR.

October 6 the shark collective composed of several NGOs had obtained the suspension of the prefectural decree of July 19, 2021 which authorized shark fishing up to the level 2A reinforced protection zones (ZPR) of the Réunion Marine Reserve.

The efficiency of shark fishing within the ZPR is an aberration because on shark attacks in the ZPR: in its opinion of February 9, 2017 (point 3.1.2.), The Scientific Council "Recalls that the attacks mainly took place where surfing activities are practiced, on areas where the reef geomorphology allows it, thanks to a discontinuity of the reef, which is the case with Boucan Canot (and other surf spots in a reef situation). It has nothing to do with whether it is a ZPR or a ZPG ».

 It is unthinkable that 15 after the creation of the ZPR a collective of NGOs is still rehashing the same information to try in vain to convince and protect a marine area which has already obtained a protection status.
