16 films to discover the world of plankton, these tiny marine organisms that drift with the currents: the images are beautiful, the exciting comments, the series "Plancton Chronicles" is a pure moment of happiness that we wanted to share with you. During this new season, we will offer you one of these films in Le Mag home page.
A WORLD ALMOST INVISIBLE
Diatoms, salps, ctenophores or phronimes, the team led by Christian Sardet manages the feat of plunging us into the heart of topics that could at first seem boring, and to hang on to the first image! Director of Research at CNRS, he designed the series with Véronique Kleiner and Catherine Balladur from CNRS Images. Each theme is presented as a film of a few minutes, completed by a series of photos. The "subjects" sometimes only measure a few microns, and to see them evolve before our eyes, in all their complexity and with all their details, is something magical.
"ERRANTS" ORGANIZATIONS
Plankton, from the Greek planktos, is the small world of wandering organisms, which move almost exclusively at the mercy of the currents, and drift in the immensity, only able for some to go up to the surface or to regain the depths. A motley crowd of miniature animals, larvae, unicellular algae, who share the same space and the same way of life.
IN THE WAKE OF TARA OCEANS SHIPPING
This series of short films shot in high definition reveals a whole range of planktonic organisms collected in the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean during the first year of the expedition of the schooner Tara, as part of the Tara Oceans mission. The study of plankton, the basis of ocean biodiversity, was one of the main themes of the expedition, and thousands of samples were collected, some at depths of nearly 1000 meters. It is a bit of this kaleidoscope of colors and shapes that the series gives us.
The Plankton Chronicles series is produced by Christian Sardet (CNRS), Sharif Mirshak and Noé Sardet (Parafilms) as part of the Tara Oceans Expedition and the Oceanological Observatory of Villefranche-sur-Mer (CNRS / UPMC). The project benefits from the financial support of CNRS (INSB / INEE), IBISA, UPMC and the City of Nice.
