Every year, humanity dumps six million tonnes of plastic into the seas. The oceanographer and environmental activist Marcus Eriksen crisscrosses the South Pacific, from the Chilean coast to Easter Island, to detect one of the oceanic whirlpools where these plastics are concentrated. Two “islands” of non-biodegradable waste have already been discovered in the North Pacific and the North Atlantic, and three remain to be located in the southern hemisphere. With what impact?
