The eagle ray is recognizable by its diamond shape, its dark gray or blue gray color speckled with white dots on the back as well as a white belly. The tail of these rays has prickles with poison glands.
Often in shoals of several dozen individuals but sometimes as a couple or alone, the eagle ray swims by moving slowly and with amplitude its pectoral wings giving it more the impression of a flight more than of a swim. This fish can reach a wingspan of 3 meters and weigh up to 230 kg.
With a calm temperament in view of their slow progress, the eagle rays have a clear ability to accelerate that allows them to escape various predators, such as the great hammerhead shark, or other sharks.
Their speed underwater allows them to sometimes make extraordinary leaps out of the water.
The head, very flattened, looks a bit like a duckbill, the mouth is equipped with sturdy plate teeth which allow it to easily crush the shells. She uses her flattened head to search the sand using sensory organs to locate their prey.
The line eagle is very fearful and usually does not get nearer than twenty meters.
Depending on the season, it is not uncommon to see them in diving in Cozumel.
