This project contributes to consolidating knowledge on the spawning of corals in the Marine Protected Area of the Hienga islet, to highlight the Caledonian coral reefs and more particularly this natural event as spectacular as it is magical that is the spawning of coral. Over the past four years, accompanied by our diving center, scientists have been able to observe coral spawning at night, a few days after the full moon in November. This exceptional event occurs when certain conditions are met. The spawning of corals remains a mysterious phenomenon. This year the particularly hot water in October allowed a fairly substantial laying on the 5thrd day after the full moon. We were expecting an additional laying on the 5rd day after the full moon in November, ie the 26th, but this never happened. The weather conditions were terrible and the water temperature had dropped below 26 ° C.
This did not prevent the perfect unfolding of the event organized that day by Sébastien Faninoz. The broadcast of the spawning took place live “deferred”. The images were filmed during the coral spawning on the night of October 28 and broadcast on November 26 during the live exchange between scientists from New Caledonia and those from the National Museum of Natural History in the auditorium of the Grande Galerie de l'Évolution in Paris. A particularly well-documented website is dedicated to this unique event: http://outremer.mnhn.fr In a few days you will find the full video of the evening of November 26 in “streaming”.
