After the horse meat scandal, the fish scandal? This is the question that arises, after the publication on Thursday February 21 of a study conducted by the American NGO Oceana revealing a large-scale fraud involving seafood in the United States, where a third of fish consumed do not belong to the species that customers thought they were buying.

In total, 44% of all outlets visited sold mislabelled fish. In detail: Sushi restaurants had the highest error rate on their card (74%), followed by other restaurants (38%) and food stores (18%).

These conservationists are interested in these consumer scams because they reveal a serious problem of overfishing. Deliveries from all over the world are replacing regional species that are in short supply. The pangasius, prized by supermarkets as a starter, landed on Western markets from Asia in 2000. This hot, brackish water fish has a bad reputation for its farming conditions.
