PROGRAM MEETS THE KOROWAI

14 DAY:

After a good breakfast and a good night's sleep, fly aboard our private TWIN OTTER to the small Yaniroma jungle village in Kombay territory. This flight of 1H30 over the immensity of the green and virgin jungle marks the beginning of our Expedition. Upon arrival we walk to the deserted mission house. We will spend the night on the ground (see paragraph Your equipment). It's time to get to know our porters, our local guide and our emeritus cook. Walk in some hamlets around.

15 DAY:

After this first night, we cross the river Dairam Kabur by canoe. Then the trek starts with 5 6H walk to meet the clan Dajjiaw and the beginning of a great adventure that will allow us to discover the thousand and one secrets of this tribe of woods. Between muddy paths and lush forest we meet the first houses perched at the treetops. Arrival at the fixed camp built by the Korowai themselves, but adapted to the requirements of the traveler in earth at the end of the world.
A jungle village with branches and palm shelters, rooms on stilts, a kitchenette, a bathroom and a toilet in a cabin above the riverbed. Dinner and overnight at the camp and for those who wish it at the trees in a traditional high house at 15 meters high minimum.

16 DAY:

Wake up to the sounds of the jungle. We are in the heart of a small hamlet of hunter-gatherers and guests of the big upcoming party. This morning we go in the forest with the men of the tribe to choose and cut the sago tree with the stone ax. This will then allow us to prepare with women the basis of all local food, sago flour. At the same time, search for sago worms in the stumps of dead trees that will be grilled over a wood fire under the immense roof of the community house. 17 DAY:

Spectacular day with the construction of a new house perched at over 20m high. We follow in the footsteps of these men of the woods for whom the forest has no secrets and to the sound of their singular song, melodious imitating the song of the bird or the cry of the cassowary, to collect materials and bark and build in one day a "house in the trees" object of our Papuan quest.

18 DAY:

This morning, we anticipate from the first light of day that this day will mark our minds forever ... Well integrated into the tribe, some affinities are created during the morning walks to discover other high houses. This morning (3H walk), we will see 5 or 6 scattered in the forest, those who wish can climb some with a thousand precautions because access is difficult. We are gradually getting used to the Korowai house lifestyle; fires for the
cooking at 20m above the ground, the separation of families, the "gray-gray" consisting of spine of snakes, centipedes, fish ... Back to camp, the evening Mass will be announced ... The guests arrive gradually in groups or clans. They announce their coming of high and strong songs, striking with their bows the aerial roots of the giant artocarpus which populate the jungle. The sound carries far and impresses anyone who is an enemy.

A Korowai organizing a ceremony must invite other clans under pain of not being invited himself to the next "party" still causing serious conflict sometimes resulting in the death of men.

All day they will arrive by dozens, bows, arrows, warrior songs, dances, shields, the nose sometimes pierced by long thorns of 10 cm. Meal of sago and worms for this naked people who wander like shadows between homes with acrid smoke. Very special atmosphere in our eyes for this primal day of celebration and for sure a unique and rare moment but for how long preserved?

Some “korowai asli” from Korowai Batu or “kowoyap” from high Eilanden will surely make an appearance. Anthropophagous, they are the last man-eaters in Pacific Asia. Attracted by the festivities (everything is known in the jungle), they will always turn their backs on us and we will have understood… Until late at night the songs and dances will continue, a unique experience that only a small handful of a few rare travelers and missionaries have had the chance to share for forty years.

19 DAY:

This morning after a little sleep, as our amazed eyes have wanted to enjoy every second of this extraordinary experience, we prepare a march without much enthusiasm; you have to go back to Yaniroma base. After some farewell bursts of emotion, we let all these groups continue their festivities by making the vow very dear that their way of life remains preserved as long as possible. Accompanied by our porters, we walk on the mud paths and in canoes, their arms loaded with bows and arrows. Overnight at mission's house after walking 6h00 the swirling head of strong images of those few days at the end of the world; a world more incredible than we could have imagined.

20 DAY:

In the morning, charter flight from Yaniroma to the city of Timika. Schedule depending on weather conditions and the company itself ... On arrival, transfer to the Sheraton hotel whose comfort will be appreciated at its true value. Dinner and night in a shared double room.

21 DAY:

Flight to Denpasar. Transfer and overnight in a double room and breakfast in a beach hotel or Ubud in the heart of Bali according to the wishes of the rest of the group before departure.

22 DAY:
