Everyone knows Komodo. The famous endemic monitor has largely contributed to the notoriety of this national park located in the heart of the Sunda Islands, in Indonesia. Preserved nature, superb beaches, hidden coves and landscapes with steep reliefs ... The decor is breathtaking and concedes to travel an almost intact scent of adventure.
Underwater, do not expect a single minute's respite: the beauty of the place is just as intense as on the surface. Shaped according to volcanic activity, the seabed offers a number of pinnacles, dry, ravines, caves around which an abundant fauna evolves in peace. The corals are very numerous and in perfect health, the colors varied and bright, but what strikes at first glance is the density of fish: do you know a lot of places where it is sometimes necessary to wave your arms to remove nearby fish, in order to better contemplate the action taking place in the blue? No ? If this type of underwater overwork tempts you, do not hesitate a second and run to get your "ticket" for Komodo.
At the gates of the famous Coral Triangle, Komodo enjoys a privileged location, where the cooler waters of the Indian Ocean meet the Indonesian Sea. The nutrients conveyed by these exchanges benefit the marine fauna and ensure beautiful encounters with pelagics: tuna, trevally, barracudas and large schools of fusiliers patrol the blue while the benthic fauna transform the reef into a real kaleidoscope. Macro-fauna enthusiasts will enjoy a fine collection of rare nudibranchs, antennas, seahorses, porcelain crabs and orangutans. Loving cooler waters, Manta rays give an almost daily representation in the South of Komodo Island, on the site of Manta alley. Still to the South, but this time Rinca Island, the sites of Yellow Wall of Texas or even Cannibal rock are full of multicolored crinoids, hard corals, turtles and large fish (angelfish are particularly massive!).
Going up north, you cross an area of very strong current, literally called Current City. Soft corals and large fish are more numerous. Be careful, the "Reef-hook" is essential because the sea winds can pick up in the blink of an eye. Thus, you will have the chance to comfortably admire the white tips, the grays and the dolphins come to play in the blue.
To discover this area, cruising remains the best compromise. Hotels are very rare there and only appear at the gates of the Park, like Angel Island Resort, small charming structure, of the "Eco Friendly" type, which offers only 10 bungalows on the private island of Bidadari, 20 minutes by boat from Labuan Bajo. The cruise will allow you to make one or two land excursions on Komodo and Rinca to discover the famous dragons, but a stay also offers you the time necessary to observe the terrestrial fauna and flora in the company of passionate people.
TO Switzerland Abyss Scuba Divers has concocted a original 13-night diving safari in Komodo, combining 7 nights cruise Departing from Bali aboard the Aurora (a magnificent 42m Pinisi) to dive in Flores Sangeang, the South of Komodo Park, then a 4 night stay at Angel Island Resort (+ 2 nights transit in Bali). The latter is ideally located for exploring the North of the Park, then observing the many migratory birds that nest there.
