There is only one place in the world where you can dive or swim in caves without more certification than that of an Open Water or level 1. The Cenotes of Yucatán are world famous. You can't miss this ...
Throughout this walk, you will be surprised by the passages from light to dark, by the effects of light crossing the jungle. You will be amazed to feel the rays of the sun revealing the mysteries of the sacred Mayan world to you, while slaloming between stalactites and stalagmites.
The paths you take will always be wide enough for two divers to swim next to each other, always at a maximum of 40 meters from access to daylight and open air. Groups will never exceed 4 divers per guide. Unlike the sea, you can still dive in Cenotes even when the weather is not nice. These are dives possible all year round!
The Yucatan Peninsula is a limestone platform that was formed millions of years ago. Throughout the Ice Age years, the level of the ocean has varied often and on several occasions this region has been found below the oceans.
When the level of the oceans fell, caves formed: the heavy rains falling on these formations carried with them carbonic acid from the soil and decaying leaves. He dug out the fragile rock and created underground passages through which water forced its way back to the sea. In this process, stalactites and stalagmites were formed.
For the mysterious Mayan civilization, whose culture reached its peak between the year 300 and 900 AD, the Cenotes (Dzonot = Sacred Well) were not only sources of fresh water, but also had an important part in mythology. They represented windows to “the hereafter”, and a key to the later life. In some caves, we still find some vestiges of ceremonies and rituals in honor of the “Gods of the Underworld”.
