Barack Obama and Dimitri Medvedev have agreed to the creation of a gigantic “cross-border” nature reserve around the Bering Strait.
The project, whose initial idea dates back to 1990, is expected to cover nearly two million square kilometers. This zone which will include the extreme east of Siberia and part of Alaska is of great biological richness but remains a fragile ecosystem.
The will of the two presidents is all the more commendable as this region is militarily and economically strategic. Funding for this international park does not seem problematic and Russia expects many benefits in terms of ecotourism.
This nature reserve, one of the largest in the world, should come into being by mid-2011 or 2012.
