DIABETES AND DIVING ASSOCIATION
PRESS RELEASE PARIS, MAY 19, 2017
"Diabetes and Diving, New Federal Regulations for Adolescents"
It is with great pleasure that the Diabète & Plongée association announces the opening of scuba diving, to adolescents from 14 years old, as part of diving with the FFESSM (French Federation of Studies and Sports Submarines) and this from 09/05/2017. It is therefore a great advance for Diabetes and Diving.
This opening is due to the studies led by Dr. Boris Lormeau, Dr. Lise Dufaitre, Dr. Agnes SOLAS and the team of the association Diabetes and Diving Chaired by Mr. Guillaume GOURY.
A first collaboration with "RéDIABYlang976" and the "Club AJD 976" in 2014 in Mayotte gave birth to the project "young diabetics dive in Mayotte", which concerns adolescents between 14 and 17 years old from Mahorais and Metropolitan who have difficulty regulating their diabetes. They were recruited according to a previously defined medical profile.
The goal of this project was to train these adolescents at Federal Level 1 during the school year, to learn about their diabetes and to regulate their blood sugar levels by practicing physical activity and by following a pre-established protocol for launching. They were supervised by a competent teaching team and were followed by a medical team. This training ended with a trip to Mayotte for the metropolitan in order to meet, share their experiences and discover the lagoon of Mayotte.
This study opened up the discipline to adolescents with diabetes as part of the French Diving Federation on 09/05/2017.
The Diabetes and Diving Association is still working to raise awareness and studies to further improve and change the regulations.
