A rather fragile fabric
THEendothelium is a rather fragile tissue formed of flattened cells that could look like a tessellate. It covers the inside of the heart and all the vessels. It is a permeable tissue that allows the exchange of substances, and found especially in pulmonary alveoli. It secretes substances that act on the dilation and constriction of blood vessels.
A preliminary study
For the moment, this is only a preliminary study carried out on ten military divers, who were made to dive each time in the same conditions, at 18 meters for 47 minutes. The results were then compared after the dives carried out with air, then with Nitrox. The study has so far been presented in summary form at a conference to the European cardiology society Europrevent.
Insufficient data for the moment
But the medical team, through the voice of Dr Emeline Van Craenenbroeck, agrees that it is not known what the long-term effects on the cardiovascular system may be for very regular users. “There is no data on this,” insisted Dr Van Craenenbroeck, although she notes that it could lead to an increase in the possibilities of coronary heart disease.
It will probably be necessary to wait for a study on a larger scale, and a larger retreat, to get a fair idea.
