Next week, from 1er to November 4, Parc Chanot in Marseille will host the thirty-ninth edition of the World Festival of Underwater Image: new team, new venue, and new spirit. While staying in the continuity of the event created by Daniel Mercier in 1974.
AROUND THE ISLANDS
The 2012 edition of the festival will take us to the islands. All the islands. Because they carry dreams but they are also real sentinels placed everywhere on our oceans. Miniature worlds, they must often face, in condensed, all the difficulties of environmental management, the fragility of the ecosystems, with ingenuity and determination. They are also often, at the same time, preserved and timeless spaces, models of marine and underwater biodiversity. And it is on this difficult equation, this unstable balance, that the new team is going this year to bring us to think. The Ocean Forum will allow the public to discuss with personalities and specialists on topics related to major issues related to the ocean: responsible consumption of seafood, marine protected areas, renewable energies, problems related to the ocean. water, port management ...
GATHER ENERGIES
International Network of Marine Protected Areas, Oceans Forum, UNESCO: many institutions that must now have their place in the festival. Because in order to safeguard our underwater heritage, the only viable solution seems to be to multiply the common actions: whether legislation, safeguarding measures or awareness campaigns, only global cooperation may have positive effects. Under the impetus of Philippe Vallette, now President of the event but also director of Nausicaa, the Center of the Sea of Boulogne, the festival is today a real melting pot that brings together all the energies around our planet sea.
ALWAYS AROUND THE PASSION OF IMAGE, AND DIVE
But for the rest, nothing changed. And it is always around the passion of the image that professionals and amateurs will find themselves. This year's program includes an exceptional screening of Yann Arthus-Bertrand's new film "Planet Ocean". Several films will also pay tribute to our pioneers. Jean-Michel Cousteau will present "My Father Commander", a documentary made in particular with the elders of the legendary Calypso. He will also present some of his films about Albert Falco, who passed away last spring. René Heuzey, through a film made in collaboration with his daughter Michèle, will pay tribute to Henri-Germain Delauze, former CEO of Comex who also disappeared this year. Among the personalities present, we will also count Jacques Rougerie, Jean-François Clervoy, Maud Fontenoy who will present her latest film "White Paradise", shot during an expedition to Antarctica with four young "ambassadors" from the institute for young deaf people. de Paris, Romain Trouble de Tara expedition, President of the large format Jury, François Sarano, President of the Small Format Jury, and many others.
FIND THOSE YOU DISCOVER IN THE MAG
You can also find those you regularly discover in the pages of the Mag: and discover in particular " Requiem for a giant », The film Patrick Masse that we recently presented to you. But also René Heuzey, who will present his new film directed by Thierry Robert and the production company "The 5e dream", shot in Greenland, retracing the adventure of two kayakers, also present at the Festival, with breathtaking images. So many expeditions that will take you on the big screen in the heart of the adventure.
BUT ALSO EXPOS
In addition to the images in competition, several exhibitions are organized during the Festival. Laurent Ballesta will propose a photo exhibition on the Grand Port of Fos: "the protected life". An exhibition proposed by the General Council of Bouches-du-Rhône will also trace, during the Festival, the saga of the COMEX and its founder Henri-Germain Delauze. And the architect Jacques Rougerie will show for the first time in France a model of 3,50 meters Sea Orbiter, an ocean vessel, built in recyclable aluminum, 58 m high and 550 tons, which will accommodate twenty people on 12 levels including 6 under the sea for long duration missions. This unique international station will be both a scientific laboratory, an underwater base and an international platform for multimedia communication.
AND TECHNOLOGICAL NEWS
Bill Todd, a long-time specialist in NASA's training procedures for astronauts, who has, among other things, developed NASA's underwater research program called NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) to participate in a table. round on technology. And Jean-Michel Cousteau will present a new atmospheric pressure diving suit called the Exosuit, which allows to dive up to 700 m without landing at the ascent.
A FESTIVAL GREAT FORMAT VERSION
This year, this is the Parc Chanot which will host the Festival, in large format: 2 000 m2 stands and exhibition, 1 000 m2 rooms and animations, Free parking 3000 places, A touch pool to touch and discover species of the Mediterranean and a diving pit will be provided on the site to allow free baptisms and increased public awareness of diving and the marine environment. Another novelty, the price of the entries will drop significantly, from 15 to 9 euros, and 7,5 euros in reduced price.
A BOOK: "PIONEER ISLANDS"
Illustration of this year's theme, Philippe Vallette, Christine Causse and the photographer Alexis Rosenfeldhave just published a book at Actes Sud that highlights the diversity and importance of islands in the balance of our oceans. Through interviews, testimonies gathered around the planet, "Pioneer Islands" gives the word to the islanders, the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Indian Ocean or the coldest seas: they express their fears , their hopes, highlight positive initiatives for our planet sea, by focusing on sustainable development and the preservation of our marine heritage in the long term. As many challenges are raised today by all the islands of the world, but that the mainlanders will probably also face in the future ...

good news, we can't talk about water without ecology. Talking about it is not enough, so I would go directly to this stand to join in their approach. see you.
