Whatfish is an on-board application that makes it easy to identify marine species around the world. More than 900 species for more than 1700 photos from different photographers. More than a powerful identification tool, Whatfish lets you explore the underwater world through thousands of high resolution images.
THE CREATOR
First oriented towards the field of marketing and advertising, Thomas Demesmaeker left his native Belgium to go to Paris, where he worked for 3 years. In 2004, he left everything and left for Honduras to devote himself to his passion: scuba diving. He then flew to the Maldives in 2005 and literally fell in love with this country and its waters. First an instructor in 3 island-hotels, he embarked in 2006 on various cruise ships and crisscrossed the archipelago from the Far North to the Great South. Since 2013, he has been responsible for Manta Cruise for Abyssworld. He shares his life between the Maldives and Bali to practice his second passion: surfing.
why such an app?
“WhatFish was born from an idea, in 2010, when I was traveling to the Maldives from Europe with an encyclopedia of the oceans and a few pounds of fish. Heavy, rather expensive (the average price of a single fish guide is 25 euros), and not really updatable.
It was at the same time that I started using an iPad and I thought then that having the equivalent of all these books gathered on this device would solve my first concerns. So I started with this idea. ”
“I'm a dive guide and we spend time with the divers, consistently describing the fish 'big like that, with such a color and with designs like this. What fish is it? ”. From there came the second idea to add to the project.
But to make an application better than those already existing, each user, diver or not, had to take pleasure in using it. More than an identification tool, it therefore needed a gallery of superb photos of the underwater world. ”

Hyper intuitive use
A PARTICIPATIVE APP
Thomas' objective is to bring together around this App a maximum of divers who wish to participate in this project. Do you have pictures of species that are not yet part of What fish? Do not hesitate any longer and contact Thomas by email: info@what-fish.com
PLATFORMS
WhatFish was launched on iPad, which remains the best format to fully enjoy the images, but we also believe in the usefulness of having WhatFish on iPhone and iPod touch quickly.
After IOS, we plan to adapt to other platforms such as Android. We thought from its conception that WhatFish should be easily adaptable and therefore accessible to as many people as possible.

Thank you Thierry… The G. Cone is between 6 and 10 cm.
Yes indeed, you are right to talk about gripping this mollusk, in the way of taking it, we can avoid being stung ... do we still have to stay particularly careful, because with this “bug”, if you are not careful… or for a non-specialist, you simply play “Russian roulette"...
So, as Christophe L. said: “Not touch"!
