Not long ago, we were still diving with “LA" Fenzy...!
Eh yes… FENZY ! The Diver's Buoy, “real”, like the JET FIN (Beuchat Sub) Of the SQUALE (Squale - Round Bezel), from MISTRAL (Spirotechnics) or Dagger at the calf… !!!
We called it: Safety Buoy, Ascent Buoy (BR), Parachute Ascentionnel (PA) or “Scope of Chiotte"!
Wink and TRIBUTE to the Creator of the Diving Safety Vest: FENZY !
It was good… But the “STAB“, It is still much better and which will then be developed by its original designer and Génial, in the 80s…: The American firm, SEAQUEST...!

Hello CEDRICK,
Here is a very good question, I will try to be brief to answer you:
- Primary vocation of Fenzy like Stab : Ensure the Safety of the Diver by modifying its buoyancy.
- The Fenzy, initially, only had an inflation system at the mouth, period. Then we added a small bottle of O, 495 L, which we dabbed on the main bottle, before diving and which we “hit” under the water, just in case, to go up in emergency. Diving balancing was always done by mouth.
- Then, with the invention of DS (Direct System), means of semi-automatic inflation, we have seen the Fenzy, on the market, equip yourself with it, always coupled with this small bottle of 0,4 L (not reprobable).
- Little by little we abandoned the little bottle (hazardous), in favor of DS… The Stabs, then arrived on the market. The Fenzy, retained despite everything, the interest of keeping the Airways out of the water in the event of a “glitch” ...
- In short, the Stab arrives… More comfortable, more ergonomic, more hydrodynamic, also allowing to replace the good old type strapping “Dumas”And the straps type“backpack“… In addition, the undercut of the Fenzy could put up the “family jewels” if it was badly adjusted as well as the back which could compress the chest uncomfortably…
- We will keep a “sparcklette” at the CO², to hit like 0,4 L, on certain
Allows me to put my two cents in ...
The fenzy as mentioned by Steph was an element that allowed you to hit the mini bottle to regain the surface in case of bp.
The stab brings a very useful element: the ability to stabilize at any depth !!!
We therefore went from a vertical position (it was necessary to fin to avoid continuing to descend) to a horizontal dive which requires a lot MUCH less effort ...
This “modern” dive made it possible to open the activity to a greater number of practitioners and PRACTITIONERS since it is less physical 😉
Absolutely MANUAL and you do well to point it out, this “New, more accessible dive"...
I just finished on what I said, some buoys were still fitted with “Sparklette“(Océane Cavalero Champion), then we gradually abandoned“ these dangerous or restrictive inflation ”for the definitive and current DS (who uses the MP Average pressure).
- The Stab has also become a practical and ergonomic equipment, storage glenoid, weight pockets, tote pockets, various hooks and snap hooks ...
- Comfort being an essential thing in diving, big improvements have been made on the lumbago and back comfort on the Stabs modern, in order to make these “horizontal” dives even more pleasant, as MANUEL emphasizes, which was not the case with our good old Fenzy...
thank you both for these clarifications.

Yes,
for having been one of those who went from the Bouée Dumas, the historical origin of the invention to the PA 61, I can say that with the Fenzy we felt like a diver…
With the stab ... we feel heavy
But let's recognize that it's especially comfortable on the surface when you are waiting to be picked up and in the event of bad weather you are comfortable.
Before we dive, now we go sightseeing
After that it is all the better, because in fact what is the sought-after goal if not to allow a greater number of people to discover the underwater world in complete peace with the maximum of safety
But anyway the old scaf 'has a little nostalgia… forgive him… he doesn't know what he's saying anymore (not quite anyway!)
Ohhh ...GERARD ! You are still alive ...
I very much appreciate your coming to give your opinion on the matter, asConsultant "Es-History of the diving"...
Thank you very much for your additional information, do not hesitate… your experience; of “very old diver”… (just kidding), Diving memory; is precious ...
See you soon and thank you.
